Bunkerspot - AMERICAS: FIELD UPGRADING LOOKING TO 2020

20-Jan-2017

A pilot project could see around 2,500 barrels-per-day (bpd) of low-sulphur marine fuel produced at a new facility near Edmonton, Alberta.

The company will make a decision on whether to go ahead with the project, which is estimated to cost CAD$75 million, later this year, reports the Edmonton Journal.

If it does go ahead, it is expected to come on stream in the third quarter of 2017.

Based in Calgary, Alberta, Field Upgrading is focussed on the development and commercialisation of a new bitumen and sour heavy oil sulphur removal and upgrading technology called De-Sulphurisation & Upgrading (DSU). The technology uses molten sodium to significantly reduce the levels of sulphur, metals, acid (TAN) and asphaltenes in heavy oil feedstocks, including oil sands bitumen.
