(Fort Saskatchewan, AB) – Innovation is the key to success in the ever-changing energy sector. Field Upgrading is an innovation leader in the energy business, creating Solutions and Alberta Innovates – Energy and Environment upgrading technology that removes sulphur in a process that is cheaper than conventional process involves mixing elemental molten sodium with high sulphur feedstock to produce a low a novel heavy oil technologies and has fewer emissions. Field Upgrading’s De-Sulphurization & Upgrading (DSUTM) sulphur product. In the development of the DSUTM technology, Field Upgrading has received funding from both the Government of Alberta, via the Climate Change and Emissions Management Corporation (CCEMC), and the Government of Canada, via Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC).

“We are on track to create a Made-in-Alberta technology that has the potential to both diversify Alberta’s economy and help clean up the planet at the same time,” says Neil Camarta, President & CEO of Field Upgrading, “We are thankful for the support of both the provincial and federal governments.”

“We want to diversify our economy and create jobs by building on Alberta’s strengths. Innovation in our energy sector is an important way to do that. The work Field Upgrading is doing right here in Fort Saskatchewan shows the rest of the province, the country and our international trade partners that Alberta businesses are ready to face the challenges and opportunities in the energy market today and for the future,” says MLA Jessica Littlewood, Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville on behalf of Minister Deron Bilous, Economic Development and Trade Minister.

“Field Upgrading is an Alberta success story,” said CCEMC CEO Steve MacDonald. “Partial upgrading technologies, such as this one developed by Field Upgrading, will reduce the carbon footprint from oil sands products and help to build a vibrant, lower carbon economy that builds on our strengths as a leading energy producer.”

“We are pleased to be able to support the development of DSU technology in the proof-of-concept stage and now the CCEMC-funded pilot tests,” says Dr. John Zhou, Acting CEO, Alberta Innovates – Energy and Environment Solutions (AI-EES). “Bitumen partial upgrading adds a great value to Alberta’s oil sands resources. The DSU is a unique partial upgrading technology and we are very encouraged by the progress made by Field Upgrading to date.”

Field Upgrading’s First Oil Celebration & Pilot Plant Showcase was an opportunity to see first-hand the DSUTM technology, tour the pilot plant and learn more about the potential for this Alberta company to help reduce sulphur emissions from the global shipping industry.

Field Upgrading Ltd. is a privately owned company dedicated to the development and commercialization of a heavy oil upgrading technology called De-Sulphurization & Upgrading (DSUTM ). DSUTM uses molten sodium to significantly reduce the levels of sulphur, metals, acid (TAN) and asphaltenes in heavy oil feedstocks, including oil sands bitumen. DSUTM also significantly increases the API gravity of the feedstocks while achieving a relatively higher yield compared to conventional upgrading technologies.

Field Upgrading recently built a 10 barrel per day pilot facility in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta to further prove and showcase their DSUTM technology.
